Finance and Accounting for the Non-Financial Manager
In 1494, a Franciscan monk and professor of sacred theology in Venice wrote the first textbook of modern accounting. Five centuries later, American or Italian, Japanese or Nigerian, businesspeople the world over still speak the fundamental language of business created by Luca Pacioli.
Investors, business owners, and managers all have a deep need to become fluent in the lexicon of accounting and finance. And increasingly, as firms catch the wave of open-book and profit-share management, everyone who works at these firms must become proficient in the language of profit.
If you are in any of these groups, you need to understand income statements, balance sheets, cash flow analysis, net present value, debt to equity ratios, the vast differences between profits and cash, and the host of financial measurements that all constitute the bottom line.

Professor Schwartz will introduce you to fluency in accounting, and add a vital dimension by showing the impact of the numbers from financial statements on a firm’s strategy, on its growth, and on where it can get money to pay for its activities. With these lessons, much of the entire world of business, from the balance sheet to debentures, from the learning curve to the Lang effect, are made clear and connected.
Professor Schwartz received his doctorate in business from Harvard University. He has taught at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, which he left to become the Dean of Boston University’s School of Management. At BU, Professor Schwartz has received the prestigious Metcalf Prize for teaching.
Professor Schwartz’s lectures are richly illustrated with hundreds of computer-generated graphics to display financial statements, definitions, formulas, and equations. Several example problems are included in the outline booklets accompanying the course.
