Mesmerism/Magnetism employs different methodologies and applications than what verbal hypnosis does. It any more mystical or any more powerful than conventional hypnosis, it is just different.

Magnetism/Mesmerism can appear to be mystical because of the terminology used in the 1700 & 1800s. In its heyday, just as with hypnosis nowadays, many claimed to have the best technique. The best technique for both methods is actually the one that works for both the therapist and the client.

Mesmerism can appear to be powerful in contrast to hypnosis because sometimes it can get results that hypnosis cannot, especially if the two modalities are combined.

Dr James Braid transitioned Magnetism/Mesmerism into Hypnosis however the two modalities are as different in their application as what night is to day. Knowledge Is Power.
