Since 1998, he has been coaching evidence-based flexibility training in the real world and online (longer than any other coach in the online space), and he has become widely regarded as the Internet’s no.1 fact-checker on claims made about flexibility and stretching.
Having graduated with a bachelor’s and master’s degrees (both with full honours) in Kinesiology (the science of human movement) – specialising in sport and exercise biomechanics – his current PhD studies are in the neurobiology and neuromechanics of stretching. Other credentials include Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (with Distinction) from the NSCA, certified personal trainer, 200H yoga teacher, and sports therapist.
Dan began studying the art and science of stretching over 35 years ago when he started training in martial arts. To date, he holds black belts in six different disciplines. He won 3 world championships in full-contact karate and was the head strength and conditioning coach with the England Karate Team for 5 years. He won multiple international coaching awards during that time.
During an extensive teaching career, Dan has delivered lectures on the biomechanics, neurophysiology, and psychology of flexibility and stretching worldwide. He created the Biomechanical Model of Flexibility, which was the world’s first physics-based approach to flexibility training. He has taught teams of physical therapists and sports medicine practitioners at some of the world’s most prestigious dance companies including Berlin State Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Paris Opera Ballet, and English National Ballet.
