Has anyone ever told you that you overreacted to a situation but you did not agree? Have you ever missed out on events, such as family gatherings, because of negative emotions?
Have you ever set goals in the future and had them not happen?
Our past experiences and the memories that go with them affect how we approach present day situations.
When preventing us from expressing ourselves in an appropriate way these experiences and memories stop us from achieving the results we want.
Time Line Therapy techniques can assist us to change all that.
Time Line Therapy is a process that assists us:
- To let go of Negative Emotions from the past
2. To let go of Limiting Decisions from the past
3. Create our future the way we want it.
These are the three major techniques that comprise Time Line Therapy—they are easy to do and make a significant change in a person’s life.
Time Line Therapy techniques allow freedom from undesired negative emotions; such as fear, anger, sadness and anxiety, by releasing these emotions from the memories that harvest them. You are then able to react freely to future situations – without the emotional baggage of the past.
Limiting Decisions:
Limiting decisions and beliefs prevent you from achieving your potential. These decisions and beliefs have come about as a result of past experiences but may have stayed with you ’till today and have limited your life in many ways. Time Line Therapy techniques allow you to leave these decisions and beliefs in the past where they belong and to learn from your experiences. Thus, enabling you to create useful and empowering alternatives.
Creating Your Future:
Finally, having resolved the unresolved issues in the past, Time Line Therapy gives us a specific way of creating our future dreams and goals in a simple process that produces results. The process involves using our imagination to create a compelling future that is inspirational and which brings about the desired outcomes.
Throughout history, humankind has been aware of the passage of time. Aristotle was the first to mention the “stream of time” in his book Physics IV. William James spoke of linear memory storage as early as 1890. Finally, the concept, nearly forgotten, was revived in the late 1970’s with the advent of Neuro Linguistic Programming. The Time Line Therapy techniques in use today are a consequence of that.
“The future is not a gift, it is an achievement.
Every generation helps make its own future.
This is the essential challenge of the present”
— Robert F Kennedy
The Creator of Time Line Therapy Techniques:
In 1985, Tad James, M.S., Ph.D. applied a therapeutic process to this concept of an internal memory storage system. The result was a collection of techniques which produces long-lasting transformation very quickly-faster than what is currently called Brief Therapy. These powerful Time Line Therapy techniques are becoming the method of choice to make fast, effective, long-term changes in behavior.
Your “Time Line” is how you unconsciously store your memories or how you unconsciously know the difference between a memory from the past and a projection of the future. Behavioral change in an individual takes place at an unconscious level. People don’t change consciously. The Time Line Therapy process allows you to work at the unconscious level and release the effects of past negative experiences and change “inappropriate” programming in minutes rather than days, months or years.
After years of development, working with clients and publishing Time Line Therapy and The Basis Personality, Tad has become known worldwide for his Time Line Therapy model. It is a revolutionary new approach which has become so popular because of its ability to create quick, long lasting results.
Be free from your past, create your future! Make it so ….. with Time Line Therapy techniques:
Time Line Therapy is a collection of techniques that allow you to gain emotional control over your life. Inappropriate emotional reactions, such as bursts of anger, periods of apathy, depression, sadness, anxiety, and chronic fear, are responsible for preventing people from achieving the quality of life they desire. Limiting decisions, such as “I’m not good enough,” “I’ll never be rich,” or “I don’t deserve a great marriage,” create false limitations and hamper your ability to create reachable and attainable goals and outcomes. Created by Dr. Tad James, Time Line Therapy¨ techniques enable you to eliminate many types of issues in your past, thus allowing you to move forward toward your goals and desires.

This 16 disk DVD set is a professionally produced video presentation of parts of Tad James seven day NLP practitioner certification program. Each DVD is about 90 minutes, so there is a huge amount of material presented, especially since it is very well edited to leave out unnecessary segments and to add in commentary by the trainers on the processes. It is available at the nlpcoaching.com site.
It covers all the basic NLP processes comprehensively and effectively including sensory acuity, rapport, submodalities, and anchoring. The demonstrations with participants for each process are very smoothly carried out, and Tad James shows his long experience in training by following the script closely and only demonstrating what he explicitly intends to demonstrate.
The series also includes several DVDs on Time Line Therapy, a powerful change technique for which Tad James is probably best known. In fast-paced and effective demonstrations, the trainers use Time Line Therapy to remove negative emotions and limiting beliefs from participants. Then they take the whole group on a fast floating journey to remove any anxiety in the future. They also show how to place a future goal in the Time Line in a way that is likely to maximize its possibility of success. These are all very useful processes.
Tad James is presenting the course with his wife, Adriana James, who is equally proficient in the practice of NLP, although she is less well known than Tad. The two of them work well together throughout although some of the jokes and little stories seem somewhat contrived – presumably after being regurgitated in too many seminars. On the other hand, this huge amount of practice is very useful in the superb double inductions which feature in the hypnosis training section of the course. They are a fine team and in general come across as very genuine in their desire to empower people and to spread the useful skills of NLP.
This video series is probably most useful for people who have studied NLP elsewhere and want to get a new perspective, or of course, for people who actually took the course and want to get a review. For people who have not studied NLP before, it will certainly be useful, but the necessary lack of interactivity in a video series could give the viewer the congnitive concepts of NLP without the experiential learning that is necessary to make sense of it and to realize its true value.
For me, Tad James sometimes comes across as a little arrogrant, for example when he talks about Time Line Therapy as the greatest invention in the history of mankind, and his self-positioning as ‘the expert’ for values and metaprograms. From the demonstrations, he is clearly on top of his material and an extremely skillful user of hypnosis and NLP, so this self-promotion and self-positioning probably wasn’t necessary and in my eyes at least, actually had a negative impact.
One of the last DVDs was pretty much a commercial for the Master Practitioner program. In fact, throughout the last few DVDs, there were various references and suggestions to sign up for the Master Practitioner course. Personally, I felt that it was a little too much upselling of other products, but I’m sure that some people will be happy to get the addiitional information about the higher level material that is available.
I didn’t enjoy the Huna section so much either. While the trainers emphasize that it isn’t NLP and are careful to differentiate it, I’m not sure that it sits well with the other videos and information and techniques presented in this series.
Overall, I highly recommend this video series to people who have studied NLP elsewhere. Tad James has a strong ability to condense a subject down to its essence and to present it easily in the form of small digestible chunks.
Detailed Description of Each DVD
On the first DVD there is the presentation of the “Learning State” which is a key formula within the NLP practice. It helps with gaining and retaining information and while useful for everyone has proved especially useful for children with learning difficulties. In association with this is also presented the stages of learning.
Tad and Adriana also focus heavily on the wider applications of NLP. Since Tad comes from a business consultant background and Adriana from music (she was a professional violinist), both emphasize different applications of NLP – from business, to family, education, health and performance optimization. The overall focus is on excellence in whatever field they discuss NLP.
It is structured with various exercises etc which can be done at home, simply pause the DVD and do the exercise then go back to the program.
Some of the things which I found instantly useful were such skills as setting out-comes, understanding what we really want and how to make and break rapport.
The sections on Sensory Acuity (DVD 2) and Language presuppositions (DVD 3) were incredibly empowering. From these skills alone I found a radical change in the way I understood other people. I noticed more, understood how they communicated more and was able to decode their sensory clues as well as their what they communicated (rather than what they said).
DVD 4 explores the fascinating world of metaphors and how they can be used to get “around” the critical faculty and influence the unconscious. We come to understand how metaphors work, how to deconstruct a clients problem and how to create a metaphor which will work. There is also an extended question and answer section which covers everything from secondary gain and attachment to illness, to selecting clients, who not to work with and the nature of problems.
DVD 5 really begins to explore the techniques and practices within NLP. It begins with meta-programs and how to understand the nature of a client’s problem(s) (and hence frame a solution) and then moves into sub-modalities. We learn how to elicit sub modalities from a client, how to map them and “map them over” to create a change in the way a client processes a specific piece of information.
We are given a demonstration where a client who likes jelly lollies and wants to give them up, maps the sub modalities over to those of meat fat which she despises. This is one of the major “quick fix” techniques used in NLP and is covered in some detail with a further excellent discussion of the ecology of NLP work, client compliance, ethics and related issues.
DVD 6 Follows on with the basic “quick fixes” of NLP and examines the use of the Visual swish. It considers how to understand a given behavior, discern its trigger and then create a swish pattern which replaces it with a new behavior. Since this is one of the more commonly used NLP techniques for minor problems and behaviors, it is covered in quite some detail. There is also all an excellent demonstration using a person who wants to no longer bites her nails and then this is followed by a number of questions and answers.
DVD 7 explores the highly significant NLP subject of anchoring. This methodology is one of the foundation practices in NLP. We get a solid introduction to how Anchoring works and explore Basic Anchoring, Resource Anchoring and Collapsing Anchors. We then come to understand how what to do when collapsing Anchors is difficult because the negative state and the goal are too far apart. The solution being Anchor Chains and we are taught how to construct a Chain of Anchors, what to place in the intermediate Anchors and what backward and forward states are. Included are a number of Anchoring demonstrations.
DVD 8 explores the fascinating world of Strategies. It examines motivational, decision and self assurance strategies and how to elicit these. The most interesting section is on eye patterns and how these patterns supply information on the way in which the client develops their own strategies. This is quite amazing to watch in a demonstration as you see a person’s eyes explaining what sub modalities they use in their strategies i.e. visual recall, visual construct, auditory recall, auditory construct, kinesthetic (feelings) and auditory – digital (self-talk). There is also a demonstration of eye tracking. There is a good discussion of problems with using eye techniques such as people to “look to talk” and cultures where it is not encouraged to look at a person when communication.
DVD 9 begins with Introducing reframing, while it is primarily a short introduction, it does cover who reframing works and basic techniques. Also discussed is how to “build” an NLP model from the various techniques provided. The bulk of this DVD covers Parts Integration.
Using this technique we then learn how to create a model of the clients strategy and use predicates to respond to it and in sales and personal situations optimize our responses to a clients specific strategy.
DVD 10 is the start of the Time Line Therapy section. This is a unique modality developed by Tad James which having similarities to NLP type techniques is quite unique. It is not found in any other NLP school. On this DVD we are introduced to Time Line Therapy, come to understand how it works and the way to get the best results. There is also a solid discussion of the problem of secondary gain (i.e. where people attached to negative emotions). Practical techniques outlined include how to elicit the Time Line, how to get the client used to using it and techniques to remove negative emotions. There are demonstrations of the major Time Line techniques.
DVD 11 continues the outline of Time Line Therapy; it begins with a comprehensive demonstration of dealing with anger on a Time Line. We then receive an outline of the second “dealing with negative emotions” technique and a full demonstration of it. Questions and answers explores such issues as dealing with secondary gain, the dangers of not completing a Time Line session, dealing with anger and suppressed emotion as well as the importance of ongoing maintenance in dealing with negative emotions.
The second section of this DVD explores the pre-requisites for change, the need for the client to put into practice what they have gained from Time Line Therapy including the development of boundaries and personal limits.
DVD 12 begins with an exploration of anxiety which is one of the major sources of requests for intervention, yet is easy to dissolve. Since work with phobias (past) or anxiety (future) can trigger traumatic memories we get advice on how to deal with such memories when they arise and disassociate the clients from such events. Time Line Therapy does not recover traumatic memory, its aim is to dissolve the pain and to do this the content of the memory does not need to be recovered and indeed exploring the memory can hamper efforts to release its emotional content.
The next section explores the difference between negative emotions and limiting decisions and the way to decode what a limiting decision is. All negations and negative beliefs are limiting decisions. There is also a challenging discussion of the relationship between limiting decisions and disease and accidents with important insight about the relationship between total individual responsibility (cause) rather than living as a victim (effect). This is clarified so we do not link being the cause with excusing the effect (the perpetuator) or by transferring the blame from outside to inside and becoming self destructive.
We then explore how to work with the future i.e. how to master the secret of creating your own future. We begin with the foundation of S.M.A.R.T and then the actual “creating your future technique”. This is a powerful technique which has a myriad of uses and exceptional potential.
The DVD is finished with a demonstration on how to deal with phobias.
DVD 13 is the beginning of the Hypnosis training section of the program. It begins with a discussion of misconceptions about hypnosis and Tad and Adriana also clarify that nobody ever hypnotizes anyone else; that all the practitioner does is assist the client in self hypnosis. This is followed by a solid historical background of how hypnosis developed, ranging from extremely early forms of hypnosis, such as in India and Egypt, to the evolution of hypnosis in modern times with special reference to the development of modern psychology. Also offered is a discussion of different forms of hypnosis and the basic concepts behind hypnosis. They especially focus on the work of Milton Erickson and permissive approach to hypnosis. It is also interesting to see how they use hypnosis techniques while teaching the history of hypnosis and give students an experience of the simple Ericksonian method.
DVD 14 continues with hypnosis training outlining the whole procedure for Hypnosis. Beginning with pre-talk, we learn suggestibility techniques and then how to in-duce and deepen trance. There are some great suggestibility techniques including the dictionary and the balloon and postural sway.
DVD 15 goes further into hypnotherapy examining the use of the Pendulum, techniques for deepening trace and stage hypnosis.
DVD 16 goes into advanced levels of training with NLP, discussing the various levels of NLP training (four levels). There is a fascinating discussion of how language relates our nervous system and how to use meta-programs to understand language and people. They also introduce other aspects of Master Practitioner training such as Values, advanced techniques, introduction to presentation skills, compulsion blowout, advanced Time Line therapy and modeling. Modeling being that technique that you find a certain behavior that is of value, you can model it, capture it and apply it to yourself and others.
This is followed with a discussion on the spiritual aspects of training as represented within Tad and Adriana’s experience and teaching of Huna and the importance of understanding the higher aspects of the mind. There is also a demonstration of Higher Self therapy and the course is completed with a summing up.
It is difficult to summarize a truly comprehensive series which offers such extensive coverage of NLP, Time Line Therapy and Hypnosis. The best I can say is that the whole series kept my attention and that I used everything I learned from this course. The course is very professionally presented, includes a wide range of techniques which are easy to master, uses computer generated graphics and diagrams to help the learning process and includes a large number of demonstrations so you can see what is being taught in action. This is certainly a wide ranging course covering everything from basic NLP and Hypnosis through to introductions to Huna and Higher Self Therapy. While certainly not a replacement for “in house” training, it is a great way to learn the basic practitioner level of NLP and related modalities at home.
